How to Remove Tough Stains Before Bringing Clothes to the Dry Cleaner
We’ve all been there: a splash of coffee during a morning meeting or a drop of oil at dinner. While professional dry cleaning is the ultimate solution for tough stains, what you do in the first few minutes can make the difference between a successful recovery and a permanent mark.
At Clips Dry Cleaning, the highest-rated dry cleaners in Muscat, we see thousands of garments every month. Here are our expert tips for “emergency” stain management at home.
The Golden Rule: Blot, Don’t Rub!
The most common mistake people make is scrubbing a stain. Rubbing forces the liquid deeper into the fibers and can damage the fabric texture. Always use a clean, white cloth or paper towel to gently blot the excess liquid.
1. Coffee and Tea Stains
If you spill your morning brew:
- Blot immediately to remove as much liquid as possible.
- Flush with cool water from the back of the fabric to push the stain out.
- Avoid soap initially, as some detergents can set tannin stains if they aren’t rinsed properly.
2. Oil and Grease Stains
Common from Omani cuisine or makeup:
- Apply an absorbent: Sprinkle cornstarch or talcum powder on the spot and let it sit for 15 minutes to soak up the oil.
- Brush off gently.
- Do not use water, as oil and water don’t mix and it might spread the stain.
3. Ink Stains
Ink is tricky and requires patience:
- Do not apply water! Water can cause ink to bleed and create a much larger mess.
- Place a paper towel underneath the stain to catch the ink.
- Bring it to the experts. Ink is one of the hardest stains to remove DIY without the right solvents.
4. Perspiration Stains
In the hot Muscat climate, sweat stains are common on white dishdashas and shirts:
- Rinse with cold water as soon as you take the garment off to prevent salts from hardening.
- Don’t use high heat when drying, as it can “bake” the yellow stain into the fabric.
When to Stop and Call the Experts?
If the fabric is silk, wool, or labeled “Dry Clean Only,” stop immediately after blotting. DIY chemicals can cause permanent discoloration on delicate fibers.
